Important Schedule Changes for Beginning of Academic Year

The Council of Deans met this morning to discuss the beginning of the academic year in light of the disruption caused by Hurricane Irene.  We understand the hardships this storm has caused and have considered multiple possibilities. While none of these is perfect, we consider the following the best course of action under the circumstances.

RESUMPTION OF CLASSES

Upon review, we have determined that we have the capacity to begin classes at 5:00pm on Tuesday, August, 30th, INSTEAD OF Wednesday, August 31st as previously communicated.  From Tuesday evening on, the normal class schedule will resume, including the already published schedule for Tuesday, September 6.  We understand that some faculty members and students may not be able to travel. We ask that faculty members contact their departments when classes need to be cancelled, and if possible to communicate with their students via SOCS email.  Students who cannot travel for classes should contact the college via academic@tcnj.edu. As always, safety is the most important consideration when you are making decisions related to travel.  Also, please be aware that the TCNJ Library may not have regular hours on the evening of Tuesday, August 30th.

ACADEMIC WELCOME SESSIONS FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

The College-wide Convocation will not be rescheduled; however, it is important that we mark the beginning of the academic year with a formal welcome. Furthermore, we have heard from many students and faculty members about how important the welcome sessions are in greeting and informing students as well as a key opportunity to begin forging student and faculty relationships.  To that end, School sessions will be held on tomorrow morning, Tuesday, August 30, from 9:00 – 10:00 am in the following locations:

  • School of the Arts and Communication: Mildred & Ernest E. Mayo Concert Hall (Music Building)
  • School of Business: TW Lounge
  • School of Education: Elementary, Early Childhood, Special Ed, Deaf and Hard of Hearing and open option only:
Roscoe West 201; Secondary education majors: Should meet with their content area School welcome session.
  • School of Engineering:  Roscoe West 202
  • School of Humanities and Social Sciences: Kendall Auditorium
  • School of Nursing, Health, and Exercise Science: Library Auditorium
  • School of Science: Brower 202

Departmental faculty sessions will be held immediately following School sessions, from 10:00-11:00am.  The locations for the majority of these sessions are unchanged from the previously planned locations.  Any changes will be announced at the School sessions.

Education majors, as previously planned, will have their additional session with the School of Education faculty from 4:00 – 5:00pm at the following locations:

  • Elementary Early Childhood: Roscoe West 201
  • Special Ed and Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Forcina 348
  • Secondary Education: Roscoe West 202
  • Open Options Education:  Forcina 227 (Dean’s conference room)

We recognize that the timing of the storm and its disruption at the beginning of the semester is particularly an issue for Tuesday-only day classes.  As with all weather-related events, we anticipate that faculty members and students will adjust accordingly. Students enrolled in a Tuesday day-only classes who wish to drop or add a course after the initial meeting (on September 13th) may elect to enter drop/add late through a request to their Dean’s office by 4:30pm, Tuesday, September 14th.
